Communications Specialist, Lead Copywriter

Location: 85-90% Remote, 10-15% On-Site (Rhode Island-based)

Salary: $50,000 - $65,000/year (based upon experience) + additional benefits

Position Description

Systems Change Strategies (SCS) is looking for an experienced and dynamic Communications Specialist to join our team. SCS exclusively works with mission-driven nonprofits, governmental entities, and campaigns that align with our values of helping people and creating positive impact in the communities we serve.


This is a full-time, permanent position. The selected candidate will be responsible for providing strategic communications, managing media relations and developing written content for Systems Change Strategies and its clients. Part of this work will also likely include project management of communications tasks and media relations.


The Communications Specialist will be expected to lead and assist other team members with drafting proposals for clients and assisting designers with copywriting for marketing. The selected candidate will be expected to participate in team meetings, develop communications planning efforts, draft concepts, work with team members and clients to deliver a quality service.


This position offers a great mix of creativity and flexibility. It’s a great opportunity for someone looking to employ their skills in media relations, digital advertising and non-traditional marketing and communications campaigns and work on high-impact projects for mission-driven organizations.


This is a hybrid role based in Rhode Island. Our team works from our homes and in the field, with regular in-person meetings, events, and other obligations in and around greater Providence.

Primary Duties

Communication Strategy and Leadership

  • Originate and refine core messaging that effectively and consistently communicates our mission, core values and priorities

  • Develop and execute strategic communications plans for the firm and its clients aligned to organizational goals and grounded in evidence-based messaging to reach key audiences that may be delivered in many formats

  • Drive a nuanced and layered messaging strategy, advancing multiple narratives simultaneously, seasonally, and/or opportunistically

  • Lead communications projects and campaigns, tracking metrics and reporting progress to partners and clients.

  • Represent Systems Change Strategies in strategic coalitions and provide leadership and coordination with key partners to ensure alignment on strategy and messages

  • Collaborate with the leadership team to lead drafting of formal responses to RFPs, RFQs, grants, and  project proposals.


Copywriting, Content Creation and Storytelling

  • Plan, develop and manage key organizational communication systems and tools (email, presentations, newsletters, website, social media, video, marketing materials, etc.) for:

    • Ongoing and strategic external stakeholder engagement and brand awareness

    • Elevating current issues, organizational successes and the voices of the clients we serve

  • Plan and track social media, paid media and earned media content, analyzing both qualitative and quantitative outcomes.

  • Ensure effective coordination of work and effective use of internal and consulting resources.


Media Relations

  • Cultivate, manage and maintain critical relationships with journalists and media outlets; maintaining an updated list of active reporters and relevant news outlets.

  • Develop and implement creative story ideas and press releases that support organizational communications objectives for the firm and its clients.

  • Monitor relevant media outlets and information sources to maintain an up-to-date awareness of the reputation of the organization and its most important partners

  • Devise and execute response strategies and talking points for a variety of media and external communications requests.


Required Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of professional experience in public relations, communications, politics/advocacy, and/or related fields; electoral campaign experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience building relationships quickly with diverse stakeholders

  • Ability to develop responsive messaging and engaging content that speaks to the priorities of various groups

  • Experience developing, communicating and managing complex communications and marketing campaigns in multiple modes of effective written and oral communications across a variety of diverse stakeholders, including dexterity in rapid response communications

  • In-depth understanding of local media opportunities and demonstrated ability to cultivate a strong local media network; successful track record pitching and placing stories

  • Skilled in transforming complex problems and ideas into compelling oral and written communications, with a portfolio of work demonstrating effective storytelling across mediums and channels (particularly in advocacy or relevant issue areas such as healthcare, workforce development, housing, etc.)

  • Experience managing social media platforms (including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn), websites, email marketing campaigns, and graphic design efforts

  • Ideal candidate is a flexible and adaptable executor with an entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to work independently as part of a team working both virtually and in-person

  • Ability to operate with purpose, urgency, and accuracy in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, taking a high-level of ownership for outcomes

  • Proficiency using Google Apps for Business products.

  • Must be located in Rhode Island
